I've always tried to find a balance between letting them be dogs and protecting them. I take Jillie to big-dog meetups, but I watch her like a hawk. Fortunately, she's got an amazing ability to avoid trouble. She shrinks down in a submissive position to pose no thread. The big dogs lose interest. THEN she harasses them.

As for snow, etc., I just dress her warm and watch her. If she shivers, walks over.
