I had this problem with Rocco also (different food though). I just pre-measured his food into snack-sized zip bags, and used my meat hammer to break it into smaller pieces. If you do a lot at once for a few days' supply, it's easier. My vet told me not to soften it because he wouldn't become accustomed to chewing the kibble thoroughly, and it will promote tartar. As long as she has teeth, she should be able to cheew the broken bits just fine but it may take a while for her to break the 'swallow whole' habit.
