The problem is with the word "breeder." Anyone whose dog gets pregnant is a breeder. Too many people are wanting to suppliment their incomes and decided letting their dogs do the work is easier than getting a job. I'm also in favor of the ASCPA; from what I gather, they support responsible breeding and try to save those in puppy mills and from the neglect of back yard breeders. There is definitely a difference in a breeder and someone who puts their dogs in contact to get pregnant, without following through with a vet, and trying to make a living out of it. Anyone who has had a pregnant animal could be considered a breeder, and it is sad that they ruin the name for the good breeders out there. And I agree with you 100%; no one wants to take responsibly for their actions. And no breeder will admit that they are in it for monetary reasons; a backyard breeder, a puppy broker, or a puppy mill will all do their best to masque their motives and to keep a good reputation for as long as they can. Thank goodness for the internet and for resources! Back in the '90s, I saw more pet stores in the Atlanta area, and would have never guessed that most pet store animals were coming from puppy mills. Most pet stores shut down rather quickly, but they are still out there. And people are still purchasing from them, and ending up heartbroken in the end. It's very sad, indeed.
