When I visit my grandparents, Harley has to stay crated a lot, cause he doens't understand that he's only allowed in the kitchen (no room for gates and pens, she's a bit of a horder). I let him out on the kitchen floor on a leash, and then I bring him outside a lot too. It helps with the crate time a lot if gates or expens aren't an option.
