I have taken my 3 1/2 year old yorkie on a trip and she was in the car for 21 hours she did fine!, really the only thing to do to let your dog stay calm is just let them be, and stop every once and a while for a bathroom break, the only time my dog Cruton got sick was when we drove by the ocean because the smell of fish was nasty! Also keep some water in a tall bowl for him just so if he is panting a lot he has some water to drink and lastly just bring some kibble for him to chew on if he wants, My dog Cruton didn't eat that much because she was kinda nervous and i also found that when the window was open Cruton seemed a lot calmer!
