Default Fact or Fiction? Hybred Vigor

It seems to be a common understanding that "mutts" are healthier than purebreds.

I wonder if this assertion is supported by any research?

For purebreeds it is easier to ascertain health risks, because there are databases to capture different types of health problems. In fact responsible breeders are avid to support this type of research to help inform of good breeding decisions.

So with mutts, we have what? Anedoctal evidence, newspaper reports?

Why is this belief so prevalent? And is there any research to support this belief?
