Welcome to YT! Congrats on your new puppy!
You might not be taking him out often enough. Set a schedule and stick to it like glue. For example, if you decide to take him out to potty every 2 hours, take him out and have him on the piddle pad or whatever for 15-20 mins. Say whatever potty command your going to use, and when he does PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE and treat. The treat should be a special potty treat. You could use cheerios for that. If puppy doesn't poop, bring him back inside and back in the crate for 10 mins then try again. You're just starting with the training, so please be patient as you will have a few accidents here and there.
Also, the crate might be too big. If he has enough room to poop on one side and hang out on the other without encountering his poop, then it's too big. Crate training, from what I've read, works if the crate is big enough for them to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. It shouldn't be any bigger than that.
