Pets are therapeutic; for me and everyone else in the world. My son had to have tubes in his ears at age 1, and needed them earlier, but could not get them due to the anesthesia risks. As a result, and to make a long story short, it affected his speech, and we went to speech therapy for about 6 months until he caught up with what level of speech was normal for his age. His therapist told me to get him a dog; she said that he would open up more and he did. We would catch him talking to the dog before he would ever converse with us, but it worked. (:
