I heard that dogs start to test your patience ("who's the boss" stuff) at the age of 6-9 months? Could this be it?

Also, my neighbor got a chow puppy downstairs, though he is being paper trained and doesn't go in the yard very often (its' my dog's "territory").

Is this a male dog thing?
