It's possible they both had a bug. According to my vet; they get bugs and virus's just like we do.
I wouldn't let diarrhea go on for very long. Good that you are trying rice; perhaps a bland diet of chicken and rice this evening will help. If it does, I would probably keep them on that for a couple of days.
If not, I would go back to the Vet.
