My breeder told me this story:
She was running to the store (gone 20 min max) and was just about to leave, one of the dogs had a collar with his tags on it (I think it was a boarder cause she doesn't use collars... she was just about to pull out of the driveway when she got a weird feeling...
She came in to find the dog with the tags stuck by the dogs throat, if she had left, god knows what would have happened.
To this day, she has never left collars on, nor does she put tags on them... she carries the tags in her purse, has them micro chipped and uses harness or show leads for all. This story was enough for me to never leave anything on Harley.
