I think 400 is beyond reasonable if he is coming with all his stuff. Neutered and up to date on shots. What more do you have to spend on? Nothing. And hes only around a year old! I know you say you can get a puppy for 600$ but a puppy is going to need more vaccinations, spay/neuter, all their belongings, it's going to cost you double.

Personally if I was rehoming one of my dogs, I would NEVER give them away for free. Unless it was a family member or friend. Someone I knew. I know that these are a part of the family, etc. But the amount of time, money and love that goes into a dog it's not wrong to ask for some of that back. I think if she really wanted to just get rid of him like that she would be giving him away for free or dirt cheap. You said he is nicely groomed and looks well taken care of. I really don't see nothing wrong with her saying she wants to find him a new home not do trial runs. If I had time to look for a home then okay, but how many trial runs are you going to do before you find a good home? I understand if something doesn't work out but I myself think it's kind of wrong to be passing him around like that. And you say you'd pay 350? Whats another 50$ ontop of that.

I don't even feel comfortable with the comment you made about not telling your parents until you bring him home. It's their home and I think since you live there you should be letting them know ahead of time. Personally I don't think you should be getting another dog at this time if you can't say nothing until he is home. I know you want to add a second dog but you should go about it in a responsible way.
