Bigger yorkies are way better! One of my little guys is about 14 pounds (he's not fat). He's a sturdy guy and great for long walks and traveling.
My understanding is that "Yorkies" were derived from several different kinds of terriers and were initially categorized by the AKC as being over or under 5 lbs. However, over time, they were "bred down" to get to the size that is considered breed standard today. The result of this is that, the crapshoot that genetics is, you never really know what you're going to get.
