Poor Maddie. If you didn't see any redness or swelling of the outer incision (and knowing how vigilant you are with her, I know you would have seen it) then it sounds like the second vet is on to the right cause- it could be a reaction to the internal dissolvable stitches. The longer it takes for them to dissolve, the more likely they are to cause an infection.
It sounds like you and the second vet are on top of things.
