I don't know why you would be offended since it is not a personal attack but merely an opinion and a logical one. A great many people feel that until the shelters are empty we should not be breeding dogs and the reasoning is there and it is logical to them. If it is not logical to you then that is okay.

You just happen to believe differently and if you are confident that you have made the right decision in your own mind and your conscience is clear, then why be offended?

I could never breed my female pet either. I have always said this and it is not because they are not "show dog standard" because I do not "judge" dogs according to this sort of "outward appearance test" (I am more concerned with temperamant and a "look" I like" which are not included in the show standard), but rather that I understand the risk and realize that no matter what size the female is if she produces only one pup that pup will grow to fill the space in her uterus and she will require a c-section to deliver. I am not willing to risk the life of my female in this way.

BUT......I respect the right of every responsible dog owner to make the right choices for their dog from an educated position. I trust the majority of people to educate themsleves and know the dangers and learn everything they possible can before attempting, mostly having the dogs tested by a reproductive specialist for their physical ability to produce w/o gentic defects, are healthy, etc.

Do I care if the dogs bred are the perfect example of the "show breed standard"? I feel this is prejudicial and like saying we should only allow beautiful people with IQs over 160 to reproduce. I think there is beauty in all people and beauty in all dogs so, if you do it responsibly, I think it is your right to breed a maltese to a yorkie or a floppy eared yorkie to a cotton coated female, etc.

People take this "show dog" thing too seriously in my opinion when they argue that if we allow breeding outside the "standard" they have set arbitrarily that we will somehow "lose" the breed. This is ridiculous and will never happen because as long as the show breeders continue their hobby they will continue to produce dogs with the standards THEY like. Maybe all the yorkies in the world won't look the same exactly, but that is part of what I Love about the breed. No two look the same!

Showing dogs is a "hobby". Granted, it must be a serious hobby since it deals with living creatures, but it is still a hobby, and the YTCA "standard" is the law! It is a CLUB which only allows certain people in! It is simply a set of archaic guidelines to allow judges to judge dogs primarily on outward appearance like a beauty contest. That's it. The people who participate may love the breed but above all else, they want to WIN and they want to have the respect of all of the other show breeders by winning! It is not a NICE hobby (show breeders will ALL admit to this fact) and it is competitive and cutthroat and people cheat, judges play favorites, and all sorts of politics and nastiness goes on. I want no part of that "stuff" but I am as obsessd with yorkies as the most ardent show breeder.

I choose to give my dogs a different life. I triain them in odedience, take them to the dog park, take them with me on errands, take them for walks, treat them like my child, give them "jobs" to do to make them feel good and not be bored, and chat on YT to feel connected to ohters who share my passion. Does this make me BETTER than a show breeder as a result? Of course not, just a different kind of yorkie fancier.

But, I get tired of people on here not wanting to hear the opinions of those who choose to believe differently from themselves. Come on people, this is America!!! We all come from different backgrounds and have different ideas and frameworks. Where is the tolerance? People get attacked and ridiculed on here for having an opinion everyday, and it is just not right. Please try to be a little more open minded and appreciate our dfferences rather than attacking. Show breeders opinions are not any more important than a hobby breeder or a pet owner if they have the same amount of experience or have taken the time to become educated themselves on the subject. Please respect this and each other.
