My small female, June, has a black cotton coat and it mattes all the time. It is really hard to take care of and I wouldn't wish it on anyone - especially any other dog.
I was growing her coat (she is almost 2 years old), but she mattes too much. I cut her into a puppy cut a few weeks ago and I love her new look. I left her face long, so she still has a topknot.
