I'm sorry to hear this. Mixed breed dogs even if they have "fancy" names are still mixed breeds. They can be susceptible to both parents health risks.
You didn't mention how old your kids were? Perhaps an older pup would be better if you have young children. Have you looked at your local shelter? If you are looking for a mixed breed, that may be the way to go.
