Congrats and welcome to YT. 6 lbs is a perfect weight.
It's never too late to take a dog for obedience lessons. I loved Petsmart's because it was all about positive reinforcement. I saw on the training thread that he has issues with food aggression, and that is something they can give you tips on.
The coat can be long, short or any where in between. It's all about your preferences and how much time you are willing to put in to it.
As for how smart and tricks- personally, I think they are very smart. But with that comes a wee bit of stubbornness. Short sessions, several times a day and keeping it fun for them will help.
