He usually goes out at 10 am or so. I took him out twice...nothing, then pooed in his crate when I was in the shower.

That's weird he's pooping in his crate, and you made it smaller, dog would rather die than poop where they sleep. I don't know if he just so use to it, he thinks he's suppose to go in it. I would thoroughly clean the crate with Nature's Miracle, don't use any ammonia-based products, and I would give fresh bedding. Some dogs are on a tight schedule and want to poop so many minutes after they eat. For him, to poop this mourning and then poop while your taking a shower seems unusual. Are you feeding him at the same times every day, or do you free feed? Does this mean you are having more problems with pooping than peeing?
