I've never been one to automatically take my dog out at certain intervals (except first thing in the morning). Yes, we taught Bailey to ring a bell so that she could tell us when she needs to go out. Its worked well for us.

When she was a puppy - we kept her in the family room with us (blocked off with blankets on the floor) - watched for potty signs, scooped up, tapped the bell with her paw, then outside. Repeat as necessary. We repeated for two solid months.

The constant supervision was the most difficult part. if for any reason, we couldn't watch her - she went into a crate. She was only allowed in the family room where she was 100% supervised. The idea is 'catch her in the act' and then correct.
