Default shaving

Yoni was shaved 2 weeks ago because he had some matts on his back legs that would not come out no matter what we did. Cutting them out made his fur look very uneven (I know, we shouldn't have taken scissors to him, having no experience with dog grooming LOL), so we took him to the groomer and she shaved him. He looked soooo cute, with his tiny body and huge head . His fur is starting to grow back now. Anyway, my mom's cousin told us we shouldn't have done it because it will ruin his coat. I don't quite understand. I mean, his adult coat hasn't even come in yet. I can see some gray coming in around his neck and slowly making its way down his body, but nothing major. She also told us that the more we brush him, the more silver he will be. Isn't that determined by genes? I wasn't too quick to believe what she said, but she meant well. Thought I'd come on here and ask.

**edit**
forgot the mention, he is only 16 weeks old, which is why he doesn't have his adult coat yet
