Age isn't a disease, so theoretically they will be fine if precautions are taken (preop bloodwork, etc.). I'd be nervous too though. Is your vet sure that they need it? If extensive home care is going on, then they may not. If there is a lot of tartar build-up, then it is likely in their best interest to have it done.
