Oh- and some things we did when we got our mini-doxie rescue (my daughter was 1 1/2 at the time and Sam weighed in at just a pound).

She never got to hold him without being in my lap.
She was never allowed to pick him up- no exceptions.
Play time was always supervised by me.

One thing we did have a problem with was that Sam thought she was one of his litter mates because of her small size and high energy. He would nip at her and chase her. So as soon as she was old enough (3) , she went to a training class with me. She got a huge kick out of being able to get him to sit/stay/down... and the bonus was it stopped his nipping problem.
