They have not told you of a nonsurgical way to manage ammonium urate stones because there is no way other than surgery. The stones are forming because of liver problems, so no matter how you cut it, dealing with the liver shunt issue is going to be part and parcel of the stone issue.
I think that is as clear as we or your vets can be. You need to deal with the shunt.
