You can try to use the ear cleaning solution from the pet store , do it well and watch if you see him scratching or if the odor continues. You can use 2 days in a row to make sure you get all the wax out , several fills with the solution ( the bottle has instructions) do not put anything inside the dogs ears .
If after that the odor persists or new symptoms arrive you may better off going to the vets.
