I've actually heard of puppies who've gotten their paws caught in x-pens while attempting an escape and suffered a broken leg in the process
In the meantime when you need to be away, I would probably put Piper in a bathroom or laundry room with the door shut just until you can find an alternative x-pen solution.
These lil' darlings are very much the masterminds, aren't they?
