Default Keep ex-pen or go back to crate?

Roxie came to us with a metal crate. She was overly protective of it, and would often try to bite anyone who came close to it. It was a real pain to get her in there at night for bed, because she would get really aggressive. Finally, we gave up and put the crate away. We bought her a soft-sided ex-pen, which she loves. However, I have to be honest, it takes up quite a lot of space in my living room, blocks the sliding glass doors, and doesn't really go with the decor. The only time Roxie is confined is at night when she goes to bed, and whenever we have to vacuum. When we go out she is free to roam around the first floor. I am wondering if we should go back to the regular crate. It takes up much less space, sort of blends in, and has a cute cover that matches the rest of the room. The ex-pen was wonderful when I had to leave Roxie with my parents for a week, but I don't know if it's necessary all the time.

What do you think?
