I really don't like flash either, so I always try first:

2) increase my ISO (as far up as I can go/deal with graininess)
3) adjust my exp comp to +2 or so

I can't wait to go home and try this! I don't think the exposure compensation button is one I've used before so something new to play with.
You ladies should be charging for all this great advice!
