Both my Yorkies are microchipped. It is injected into them, just like the vaccinations. No need for sedation.
The vet will give you the paperwork to register the mirochip. When Lil Bit was microchipped it was a company called Avid, and I mailed the paperwork in.
With Beamer, the vet had changed to Home Again, and I registered it online. I also registered Lil Bit's microchip with them too - as they will let you register other company's chips with them.
