I walk between 6 and 8 miles each morning with my little boy and our yorkie pup. I take the buggy so my little boy can have a break in the middle, but he still manages to do at least 5 of those miles, which isn't bad considering he's just had his 4th birthday. And I have a sportskit type bag hanging on the handles which the pooch can go in if she gets tired. She loves being able to look out of there while we stroll on.
