Lexie was diagnosed with a liver shunt about 3 weeks ago and our vet started her on metronidazole, 1/2 tab a.m. and p.m, plus we changed her from Science Diet L/D to Science Diet K/D. She had improved greatly. We boarded her in order to go out of town on vacation (with a wonderful kennel) and they called us this morning saying she was having trouble walking and trouble with her backend - knowing some of the effects of liver disease I thought the worse - new symptoms involving neurological symptoms. Our kennel delivered her to our vet and our vet said that metronidazole side effects can mimic the neurological signs of advancing liver disease. This was news to me - just want to warn anyone on this drug to be aware of this. Our vet took her off this drug and ran blood work checking her liver enzymes, which he said her enzymes levels are as good a results as he seen on her in a long time - so I guess the L/D, and changing to the K/D has improved her liver. Has anyone else has these side affects from this antibiotic and, if so, have you had any luck with a different antibiotic?
