Have you tried to blowdry him using the brush to gently straigthen out the wet coat and dry down the line from root to tip? It might help out a bit there. Also from Laser Lites they have a product called pet silk, that can be used two ways, added into your conditioner, and or diluted with water in a spray bottle and used as a grooming spray.
