No, ideally she would never be out alone to encounter them. However, rabid animals are nuts! Who is to say I won't walk out with her one day to find an infected raccoon or possum in my yard, under my car, by my trash, etc. Secondly, the statistics of canine rabies in my area don't mean squat to me. I would hope the number is low because dogs are required by county law to get the vaccination, therefore making them unsucceptable to the disease if they were to be attacked by a rabid animal. If the case is that they are vaccinated, the number of infected dogs would be low, wouldn't it? Proving the statistics are low, but not that rabies isn't a problem. Plus, how many wild animals infected are never encountered by humans? Quite a few, I would think. Since wild animals transfer the disease to dogs, and humans, it seems that CANINE cases shouldn't be the only ones of concern. Not to mention the fact that if my dog should bite someone or their dog...unlikely, but not completely impoossible, there is nothing they can do if she has had the shot...on the other hand, if she hasn't...do I have to go on. It is better to be safe that sorry. I won't put my life on it, but maybe you should do research on how many dogs have died from getting the vaccination versus not getting it? There are no outbreaks of measles, smallpox, rubella, polio, etc, but I still have my CHILD vaccinated for it...For both dogs and humans, it is REQUIRED BY LAW where I live, therefor I will continue to do so. That would be like saying that my opinion is Mr. Smith deserves to be killed because he is a bad person, screw the law if it is my opinion?!?!
I do however see your point, but such an outlook on the situation is not possible or practicle in my neck of the woods.
