I'm not afraid of my neighborhood dogs (well, most of them any way) but we do back up to open space and another subdivision. We've had strange dogs running through here recently (along with the odd bear). The other night, a pitbull mix and german shepard came running up on to my porch while my husband was taking Rhett out before bed- luckily he's a big guy and was able to scare them off (with Rhett barking furiously the whole time). |
I thought the pepper spray could be dangerous to use on dogs because it could make them more aggressive. I know there is a citronella spray on the market, and I think Petsmart might carry it, to chase dogs off.
I was having the problem of dogs running out at us when I walked my dogs. I think because I would walk four or more at a time, the dogs would run up, cause mine to go nuts, then think twice. However, I don't know if most of the dogs stopped because my dogs act like a pack of pitbulls or because I yell at the dogs. I've also firmly informed owners that we have leash laws. I told one owner that if I had to, I would start walking with my cattle prod again and if I had to use it on his dog I would. I don't actually have a cattle prod.

But when loose dogs started getting ridiculous, I complained to my homeowners association and I went to our homeowners meetings and brought the subject up. If I can keep my dogs contained, other people should be able to do the same.
