You should ask your breeder their philosophy on breeding - what are their goals? What kinds of testing do they do to insure that their puppies are healthy and that they are not breeding dogs with known breed issues. Our breed is 36x more likely than any other breed to develop liver shunts so this is a definite "must ask" question in my opinion. I'd also ask about luxating patella (another breed issue) and given all I keep hearing about neurological diseases that may be congenital, I'd ask that too.

You are smart to ask these questions now - I did not do that with my first two dogs but did for my third. I have a breeder that I can call at any time with any issue and she is there for us.

As for size of the dogs - I always ask if they breed to the Yorkie standard - you want to avoid anyone breeding a dog that is too small or anyone saying they have "teacups."
