Cooper actually grabbed the bird in his mouth and the bird screamed!! I picked Cooper up and was able to shake the bird out of his mouth and the bird scurried away, limping as fast as possible. I don't think the bird was able to fly even before Cooper attacked him, or he would have flown away.

Each of my girls caught baby birds in mid air on different occasions - then raced around the yard like they had a toy in their mouth - I was unable to save the birds but they weren't attacking - I think they saw it as playing with a new squeaky toy.
