I was told a dog's name should be two syllables, to separate it from most commands that are one syllable (somehow this made sense to me). I was also told by Ruger's trainer to not use his name when he is bad, only when he is good. The name should have a positive association with it. But, it's hard not to yell his name when he is a bad doggy.
BTW, my girlfriend and I were trying to come up with names. Since I'm a firearms instructor we tried the name Ruger and he immediately turned and looked at us when we called it. Other names didn't have the same effect. I also thought it was fun giving him a name that only a much larger dog would have.
