You'll figure it out as you go. If he is having way to many accidents, you can try the laminate piece. That's easy to clean and he'll be able to tell the piddle pad apart from the floor because of the texture change. Also, what worked for me when I changed my already trained 1.5 year old to piddle pads was using a piddle pad that had a scent. My mom likes throws and we have carpet so I wanted him to identify his potty area some other way.
