Actually underneath is a vinyl table cloth to prevent any accidents from seeping into the hardwood floor.

That is what I would do otherwise you are going to be washing that blanket more than you would like.
You might want to even take 2 pieces off of the pen to make it a little smaller. I did that when I first brought home Doodlebug and just had a square instead of the rectangle. It worked great
