I keep the retractable leash locked at 4ft when we are walking and then when he wants to sniff on the grass I unlock it and then let him go as far as he wants on the grass he is actullay very well behaved on this type of leash probably because I trained him on a standard 6 ft dog leash. He does NOT pull me 16ft ahead like most other dogs on retractable leashes do. He stays right by my side even if its unlocked Polo is not a puppy anymore he is two years old and this is our first time using an retractable leash! If I used one when he was a puppy then he would have horrible leash manners.
