Have you taken him to the vet for a check up? It is good idea to do that when you get a dog. Fleas often bring parasites with them, so I would bring a stool sample to your vet.
Your vet can also give you some topical drops for the fleas, something like the product "revolution". These drops can be applied once a month as a flea preventative if you find you have a reoccuring flea problem.
As for his "dog smell", it could be a minor issue with his anal glands. The vet will be able to empty them.
