Big Dogs & Little Dogs - Help? We have had Kerry Blue Terriers (currently two - 33 and 37 pounds, female and male, mom 5 and son 2, both neutered) for 10 years (not these dogs, obviously). I decided I wanted a tiny dog, so I recently got a Biewer Yorkie puppy, now 15 wks, 3 1/2 pounds. They all get along great.
I am currently dog-sitting my son's dogs - an American Eskimo female (8 yrs, 20 pounds) and an American Mastiff (17 weeks, 45 pounds). It's a handful and a half. The adult dogs are easy, but the two puppies terrorize me. Most of the time they get along fine, but if Dozer (the mastiff) gets rambunctious, he could seriously injure Dante (the Biewer). So I'm segregating them a lot, using time outs, etc., to discourage rambunctious behavior on Dozer's part, and provocative behavior on Dante's part (barking at Dozer and then running, for goodness sake!).
Does anyone else have experience with very small and very large dogs? Any advice you can offer? Though my son will take his dogs home Monday, I'm sure this won't be the last time I'll be "dog parent" to all 5. |
