I was confused at the beginning too.
The first one I would call a crate, the second one a pet carrier. However, when Merlin was very young I would have him in the pet carrier but since he has grown I keep him in the crate at night. The crates usually come with a divider so you can minimize the space if you need to.
We also thought it was a good idea to have him in the pet carrier first to get him used to it when we take him somewhere.
