I think I know what you mean, but it sounds like his harness is different than the ones we have. We have the carseat belt attached to the bottom part of the seatbelt (the part that's holding the carseat). Maybe it would help if you sat next to him the first trip or two? I did that with Chase, and he was fine after he realized he had to stay in it. Now he really likes it.
