I think that most people do understand exactly what it means.
Being compassionate does not mean that people should sit idly by and ignore when a pup might be harmed. If you are referring to another thread, no one was being mean...they were trying to help. Perhaps you don't care for the offers that were made, but that does not make them wrong or mean.
