Yes, when the whites of their eyes show, the topknot is too tight.
To the OP, another thing to watch for is the hair at the very inner corner of the ears. I always have to be careful not to catch up that hair in the topknot. Not only does it not look good, but even a looser topknot will pull the delicate skin near the ears.

Use a band cutter to remove. Never pull the band out of the hair.
Once my boys' hair was long enough, I started using cloth mini scrunchies for daily wear. We save the bands for dress up.
