Confused Yorkie Grooming Anxiety - help!

My 13 year old Yorkie Andy has developed an intense dislike for being groomed. I had been taking him to a groomer for awhile but now I don't think she wants to do him anymore. Last time I had him there she said he threw up and she couldn't finish the grooming (this was at PetSmart). So I decided to try grooming him at home. He throws up when I groom him too, and pants/shakes/whines. I'm not a very good groomer (the results are pretty funny looking, but that's another story), but I'm always very kind and patient with him. He throws up white foam with nothing in it. I've read that's dehydration, and also that he needs to eat something. So this last time I fed him a little and then groomed him. The white foam again! I'm at my whits end. My little boy needs groomed, but I don't want to make him sick. Do doggie downers really work? I tried a little chamomile that someone recommended, but it didn't work at all.
