good luck..............Smokey when he was little would pee on the pads....but never poo...he would poo beside the pad.....but not on it...then he got to pooping everywhere and marking everything in site............now he wears a belly band 24/7 and he poops where he wants...no matter how many times we moved him...he still does it...and he will be 4 in March..........so i know there is no retraining him............as you say........just have to love him..........and be on poop patrol 24/7
