You can use little plastic bands they make for this purpose. They just slide off the hair, rather than grabbing hold like rubber does. I'm sure someone here sells them, or you can find them in a beauty supplies store, or even a drug store. One pack holds a couple hundred tiny bands, and the pack shouldn't cost more than a few bucks.
