Everything I read about AVG was very positive, and the articles all said AVG and Avast worked much the same way. Here's a quote from one article about AVG which makes me feel much better.
The Resident Shield component gives your computer continuous protection. It scans every single file that is being opened, saved, or copied, and guards the system areas of the computer.
